About the game
Who invented 2048?
2048 was created by Italian web developer Gabriele Cirulli in March 2014. He was 19 at the time and built it over a weekend as a personal project. It was originally hosted on GitHub Pages and went viral within days. The game itself is inspired by Threes!, a paid iOS game by Asher Vollmer.
Is 2048 free?
Yes. The original game and all its variants — including the ones on this site — are free to play in your browser. No signup, no payment, no ads interrupting your game.
Is 2048 math?
It uses addition (you double numbers by merging), but the gameplay is pattern recognition and strategy, not calculation. You don't need math skills to win. Most strong players are 12-year-olds, not math professors.
Is 2048 luck or skill?
Mostly skill. Each new tile is random (90% a 2, 10% a 4), but the random spawns average out across a game. A skilled player using the corner strategy wins about 80–95% of their games. The other 5–20% are unlucky spawns.

How do you win 2048 every time?
No strategy wins 100% of the time, but the corner-stacking + snake pattern used by top players achieves a very high win rate. Can you undo a move in 2048?
On 2048 Hub, yes — press Z or tap the Undo button. The original play2048.co does not have undo. You can undo up to 50 moves in a row here.
What does the Undo button do?
It reverts your last move exactly — board position, score, and history all roll back. Use it sparingly. Saving your undo for the moment you accidentally merge the wrong tiles can save a 30-minute run.
What is the highest tile possible in 2048?
On a 4×4 grid the theoretical maximum is 131072 (217), assuming every spawn is a 2 and no moves are wasted. In practice, the highest tile most human players have ever reached is 16384 (214). The world record (achieved by an AI) is much higher.
Why does 2048 spawn more 2s than 4s?
90% of new tiles are 2 and 10% are 4. This ratio keeps the game solvable. If it spawned more 4s, the board would fill up too quickly with high-value tiles you can't merge.
What happens when I reach 2048?
On 2048 Hub, the game shows a "You Win" message but you can keep playing to reach higher tiles (4096, 8192, 16384, etc.). Your score keeps accumulating. Most strong players consider reaching 2048 the real win and stop there.
Why does my game end so quickly?
If the game is over after only a few moves, you probably pressed an arrow key when no tile could move in that direction (this is allowed and doesn't cause a penalty — no spawn happens). The real cause: the board filled up and no adjacent tiles can merge. Use the snake strategy to delay this.

Can 2048 be played offline?
Yes. Once the page has loaded, 2048 Hub works offline. Your best score is stored in your browser's localStorage, so no internet connection is needed after the initial page load.
How do I save my best score?
Your best score is automatically saved in your browser's localStorage. It persists across sessions on the same browser. If you clear your browser data, the score will reset.
Can 2048 be played on a phone?
Yes — swipe gestures work just as well as keyboard arrows. 2048 Hub is optimized for both desktop and mobile browsers, including iOS Safari and Android Chrome.
Does 2048 work on iPad?
Yes. All modern tablet browsers (Safari on iPad, Chrome on Android tablets) support the swipe gestures needed to play 2048. The grid scales to fit your screen.

Threes! (by Asher Vollmer) was the original 2014 paid iOS game. 2048 is inspired by Threes — both involve merging matching tiles by sliding — but Threes also has special 1 and 2 tiles that combine into a 3. 2048 simplifies this by making all tiles powers of 2.

Reaching 4096 requires combining two 2048 tiles. The challenge: getting a second 2048. Most players who reach 2048 can't sustain the chain management to produce another 2048 before the board fills. The snake strategy combined with extreme patience is required.
Why is 2048 called 2048?
2048 is named after the winning tile — the goal is to combine tiles until you create a tile with the value 2048. Gabriele Cirulli chose 2048 (211) because it's a satisfyingly large but reachable number that takes a typical game 10–20 minutes to reach. Is 2048 good for your brain?
2048 trains spatial reasoning, planning ahead, and pattern recognition. Studies on similar puzzle games suggest short sessions improve focus and working memory. Whether it makes you "smarter" overall is debatable, but it definitely exercises parts of your brain that passive scrolling doesn't.

What's the difference between 1024 and 2048?
1024 was a simpler 2014 clone (by Veewo Studios) that preceded 2048 and used the same sliding-merge mechanic with a 210 goal. 2048 (by Gabriele Cirulli) is the more polished successor that became famous. Functionally they are very similar; 2048 has better animations, a slicker UI, and the higher target number.
